Dark Side Of The Moon

Brain Damage

The lunatic is on the grass.
The lunatic is on the grass.
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs.
Got to keep the loonies on the path.

The lunatic is in the hall.
The lunatics are in my hall.
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more.

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

The lunatic is in my head.
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'til I'm sane.
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me.

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

"I can't think of anything to say except...
I think it's marvelous! HaHaHa!"

With our backs to the sea
we clamber at low tide around rocks
that from the foreshore would appear
as if rough cast with oysters.
We’re safe in our Warehouse sandals
but if we’re not cautious
then these oysters
these big fat Pacific oysters
can cut our fingers till they bleed.
Today though we don’t care.
I turn to catch your smile
as warm and wide and ready as the sea.
You don’t have to say please
and neither do I.
Just think –
the whole world on our tongues
bursting tangy and replete
from a jagged
oyster shell.

Content WIth Sunshine

Wrapped up against a cold southerly
we sit savouring welcome winter sun
reading film synopses, amused by
the frequently flamboyant language
used to tempt hungry theatregoers,
reminiscent of popular wine vernacular -
granite severity/boilingly alive imagery/each
shot like a waking dream/autumnal masterpiece/
the year’s indelible movie experience -
one weighing up finances and time
against the irresistible fare
the other, no stranger to hunger,
content with present sunshine.

It was passed from one bird to another,
the whole gift of the day.
The day went from flute to flute....

Sylvia Fights Off The Boys

Everytime, it comes around
to this
I know when to expect it

He will caress my face with
his forefinger, his floppy
fringe hanging over
his eyes
He will trace
the scar on my cheek
back and forth
erasing it, and he will say
'How did you get this?'

and each time
I tell another story

but the truth of it is
it was a rollerskating accident

and the truth of it is
a pirate with his rapier

and the truth of it is
I am a rotting apple
and it is my worm

and the truth of it is
it was the sharp bite of death

and the truth of it is
I hit my face climbing out
of my grave

but the truth of it is
good girls don't have scars

Skin

McCahon 1
Originally uploaded by Adagio.

Such a snug fit this skin, familiar;
for the most part comfortable enough
so as to be not even felt;
until a minute chink appears in the armour
and all hell breaks loose:
The sudden reminder of humanity.

Watching Robert

Originally uploaded by Adagio.

Watching Robert......turning the full force of his attention on Mark, Steven saw, what only a few days before he’d tried to see and failed, Robert as he might appear to a stranger meeting him for the first time....charismatic was the word that sprang to mind......with women the technique would be devastating.

Afterwards

Perhaps, only in the searing light of
afterwards do we finally arrive
at knowing, and in that final knowing,
at the collapse of love’s pedestals,
realise that we had seen through a glass
but darkly, and known not at all.

I Was A Feminist In The Eighties

To be a feminist you need to have
a good night’s sleep.

To be a feminist you need to
have your consciousness raised
and have a good night’s sleep.

To be a feminist you need to
have regard for your personal well-being
have your consciousness raised
and have a good night’s sleep.

To be a feminist you need to
have a crack at financial independence
have regard for your personal well-being
have your consciousness raised
and have a good night’s sleep.

To be a feminist you need to
champion women, have a crack at
financial independence, have regard
for your personal well-being
have your consciousness raised and
have a good night’s sleep.

To be a feminist you need to do the
childminding, washing, shopping, cooking and cleaning
while your mind is on higher matters
and champion women, have a crack
at financial independence, have regard
for your personal well-being
have your consciousness raised
and have a good
night’s sleep.

To be a feminist you need to button
your coat thoughtfully, do the childminding
washing, shopping, cooking and cleaning
while your mind is on higher matters
and champion women, have a crack at
financial independence, have regard for
your personal well-being, have your
consciousness raised and have
a good night’s
sleep.

To be a feminist you need to
engage in mature dialogue with
your spouse on matters of domestic
equality, button your coat thoughtfully
do the childminding, washing, shopping, cooking and cleaning
while your mind is on higher matters
and champion women, have a crack at
financial independence, have regard
for your personal well-being, have
your consciousness raised and
have a good
night’s
sleep.

Then a lion came prowling out of the jungle
and ate the feminist all up.

Shanty

Of fibrolite
corrugated iron
demolition timber
discounted paint
of most unlikely colour.
Very possibly illegal
these baches
are accepted
by a coast of rock and sea and shell -
have been inspected
and approved
by
seagulls -
have learnt the language
of pohutukawas.
For a while
now
here
we have heard
these old baches sing!
